Chapter 52.Different shapes of hardship-2

0 Views 0 Comments

’’Where did you get that?’’ Mylo asked looking at the half face hanging off.

“I ripped off that Pariah. Hmm. Before feeding him to the dogs. Hmmm.”

Mylo looked stunned, but he quickly shook it off.

“You’re… doing better than I thought. Are you alright?”

”Hmm? You’re asking me? Hmm. Tell me. Did you kill him?”

She tossed the severed face aside and swayed her hips slightly as she questioned him.

Taking a moment to gather his thoughts, Mylo replied, “Well… yeah. Technically, I did kill him.”

At his response, the girl’s scarlet eyes scanned him from head to toe. Confused, she tilted her head to the side.

She walked right up to him and poked his arms, trying to gauge his strength.

”…What are you trying to do?” Mylo asked, remaining relaxed since he didn’t sense any immediate danger from her.

Her nails aren’t hurting me… At least she has control over herself…

”Hmm!” she huffed.

”W-what?”

”Don’t lie. Hmm. I am kind. I will not kill you. Hmmm.”

”Why do you think I’m lying?”

”You are weak. Hmm. I can’t feel any skill. Hmm.”

”…”

”Hmm.”

”Well, I had some help. But hey, I delivered the final blow.”

”Still lying. Hmm. It’s not possible. Hmm.”

She dismissed him with a flick of her head, her dirty strands of hair hitting Mylo’s face with a soft swish.

She turned back, picked up a dead Vexfang, and pinned it to a nail on the wall. With a swift swipe of her hand, her long nails sliced a clean cut across its head, letting the blood drain out into a vessel below.

Mylo’s eyes twitched at the sight.

I definitely need to be careful around those nails…

Anyway, so she’s been hunting Vexfangs and eating them. It’s good that she has a food source here, but eating raw Vexfangs—no, wait, maybe that’s just normal in this place.

Moving a bit closer, he tried to continue the conversation.

“You called him a Pariah… is that what he was called?”

”It’s what everyone called him. But it’s not his Identity. Hmm. What’s your identity? Tell me.”

Identity… Ah, I see. In this realm, titles and names are used to denote power. Your identity is what people refer to you as.

”Mylo Zane. What’s yours?”

”Tritia. Hmm. Why are you here? Hmm?”

She sat down on the cold stone floor, waiting for the blood to drain completely.

”Same as you, I guess. He… the Pariah… kidnapped me.”

At his answer, she shook her head, making Mylo raise an eyebrow.

”I wasn’t kidnapped. Hmm. It’s a long story. Come here.” She tapped the empty spot beside her.

Curious, Mylo sat down next to her.

”We were migrating from the Marrowfields because of the war. Hmm. Our village was destroyed. He met us at the Hollow. There, he beat many of our warriors. Hmmm. After that, he proposed to me.”

”Wait, proposed? So you came with him because he wooed you?”

”Listen to the whole story, stupid! Hmm! He said he would become part of our culture and perform the ritual of Matebind. My father agreed after receiving 1,000 Marrows. Can you imagine? Hmm?”

Hearing her explanation, Mylo pieced the situation together. “So… you were sold by your father.”

”No, idiot! Hmm! Father agreed because he wanted the Pariah to join us, since he was powerful.

“Also, Matebind isn’t something you perform because you want someone. Both people have to accept it. Hmm, I did trusted him in the beginning.

’’But during the Matebind ritual, he altered the pact, changing it into a Soulbind!”

”Oh…”

”After that, we had no choice. Everyone decided I wasn’t worth fighting for, so I was abandoned.”

Despite the grim nature of her story, Mylo didn’t catch any overt sadness in her tone. Still, deep down, he couldn’t help but feel about the girl abandoned by her own people, enslaved by a lunatic, and now trapped in a forest she couldn’t escape.

It just irritated him a little, that was all.

”Hmm. That’s why you couldn’t have killed the Pariah. Tell me… if you had killed him, shouldn’t his soul remnant have bound itself to you? Hmm?”

Mylo pulled back slightly, mulling over the details of what Tritia had just said.

“Wait, explain that a bit more. Why would his soul bind with me?”

Tritia glanced at him with deep suspicion, as if convinced he was still lying.

“The Soulbind ritual creates two remnants, one with me, and one with him. He was the master of my soul. Anyone who killed him would have his remnant attached to their own soul, becoming my new master.”

So because I don’t carry the remnant, she can sense it and deduced that I was lying.

Except he hadn’t lied; he had killed the lunatic. That was what confused him.

Focusing his gaze on the empty air, Mylo called out in his mind.

Hey, System. You need to explain these things to me.

He waited ten seconds, but nothing happened.

Oi! What’s the point of your existence if you don’t offer any information?

He waited three more seconds before a blood-red screen finally materialized in front of him.

….

[NOTIFICATION]

Despite acquiring residency, you remain a primary resident of Earth.

To Narak, you are also an Earthling.

Therefore, any foreign ritual that lacks a balance between Narak and Earth will fail to take effect on you, dissolving into nothingness.

…..

Hmm… Is that somehow related to why I can’t use active skills back on Earth? It had stopped me from using skills directly.

No matter how much Mylo tried to piece it together, he just didn’t have enough clues to form a solid lead.

Giving up for the moment, he redirected his thoughts elsewhere.

”You said I don’t have the soul remnant, so do you have any feeling who might? I mean, you still have your half, right?”

Hearing his question, Tritia dropped her gaze, her shoulders slumping as she replied unenthusiastically.

“That’s the problem. Hmm. There is no connection. My bind is still there, but the other side has completely disappeared, as if it never existed at all. I don’t know what to do. Hmm.”

Mylo followed her gaze down to her wrist, where she was absentmindedly caressing the deep, raw marks left behind by the chains.

The ugly scars were still somewhat fresh, and her constant rubbing kept them from healing properly.

Reaching out, Mylo gently took hold of her hand, stopping her.

Tritia narrowed her scarlet eyes at his movement, but she didn’t pull away.

Mylo lightly stroked the skin near her wrist, his touch soothing and deliberate, as if carefully molding delicate clay.

”Does it still hurt?”

”This much is normal. Hmm.”

”It’ll heal better if you stop picking at it for a while.”

”It won’t. Hmm.’’

’’It will, you just have to give it enough time.’’

’’Hmm.’’

’’And probably some care.’’

’’Hmm. Were you the one who left that black bread and water for me, Mylo? Tell me.”

”Yeah. Sorry about leaving you in the cage, though. I didn’t have much of a choice at the time.”

”Mylo Zane. Hmm.”

”What?”

”Do a Soulbind ritual with me. Hmm.”

Mylo tried to pull his hand back, but her grip tightened. Her sharp, curved nails rested against his skin like light feathers.

He looked down at her hand, then up at her face, then back to her hand, before finally settling his gaze on her eyes.

With a faint and in low voice, he asked.

’’I literally appeared out of thin air in this cave. Don’t you have a single question about that?”
