Chapter 258: The Breaking Point

0 Views 0 Comments

Midnight settled over Solaris City like a blanket of silver and shadow.

Damon stood on his balcony, hands on the cool stone railing, gazing out at illuminated towers rising toward the stars.

Even now, lanterns burned below, celebration drifting through the night.

But Damon was not listening to the city.

He was listening to the room beside his.

The walls of the Sky-Sovereign Hotel were thick, reinforced with sound-dampening formations that could block the noise of a battlefield. But they could not block the Incubus Celestial Eyes.

And they could not block the sound of a woman breaking.

It started as a whisper.

A small, choked breath that slipped through the barrier like water through cracked stone.

Then it grew.

A sob.

Then another.

Then a cascade of them, each one heavier than the last, each one carrying the weight of years spent holding everything in.

Damon closed his eyes.

He had known this would happen.

He had felt it coming since the moment they landed in Solaris City, since the moment she heard the whispers in the streets, since the moment she saw the palace gates and remembered what she had left behind.

He had let her fall.

He stepped from the railing and activated Chaos Step.

The world bent around him. Space folded. The distance between his balcony and hers collapsed into a single point of existence.

And then he was inside.

The room was dark.

The curtains were drawn.

A single lamp burned on the bedside table, casting a weak circle of light across the bed where Lumina Solaris sat.

She was not wearing her disguise.

There was no binding around her chest, no illusion masking her face, no male robes hiding her curves.

She sat in the center of the bed wearing only a thin silk gown that had slipped off one shoulder, her golden hair cascading around her face in tangled waves.

In her hands, she held a tiara.

A delicate thing of white gold and sapphires, set with stones that glowed with a soft, internal light.

She was staring at it like it was a curse.

She did not notice Damon at first.

She was too lost in her own pain, too consumed by the memories that the tiara had dragged up from the depths of her soul.

Her fingers traced the sapphires, lips moving silently—then she saw him.

She scrambled backward on the bed, clutching the tiara to her chest like a shield.

“How did you get in here?” she demanded, her voice cracking.

“The barrier—”

“Does not matter,” Damon said gently.

He did not approach.

He stayed where he was, letting her see that he meant no harm.

“I heard you crying,” he said.

“So I came.”

Lumina’s face twisted.

“You should not be here.”

“I should not be here,” Damon agreed.

“But I am.”

He took a step forward.

She did not retreat.

Another step.

She held the tiara tighter.

“Leave me alone.”

“No.”

She looked up at him, her eyes red and swollen, her cheeks wet with tears that had not stopped falling.

“Why do you care?” she whispered.

“I am nothing. I am a fraud wearing a dead family’s crown.”

Damon stopped at the edge of the bed.

He looked down at the tiara in her hands.

Then he looked at her.

“You are not a fraud,” he said.

“You are a survivor.”

She shook her head.

“I have been hiding for years. I have been running from everyone. From my enemies, from my family’s legacy, from myself.”

She held up the tiara.

“This is all I have left of them. And I am not worthy to wear it.”

Damon sat down on the edge of the bed.

He did not reach for her.

He did not try to take the tiara.

He just sat there, close enough that she could feel his presence, far enough that she did not feel trapped.

“You have been running,” he said.

“I know. I have been running too.”

She looked at him.

“From what?”

“From the same thing you are running from,” he said.

“The fear that I am not enough. The fear that if people saw the real me, they would turn away.”

He paused.

“But I stopped running.”

She stared at him.

“How?”

He met her gaze.

“I found people who saw the real me and stayed.”

He took the tiara gently from her hands and set it aside.

“You are not a fraud, Lumina. You are a princess. And not because of that crown.”

He touched her chin gently, lifting her face to meet his eyes.

“You are a princess because of what is inside you. The strength you have shown. The discipline you have maintained. The kindness you still carry despite everything that has been taken from you.”

Her eyes welled up again.

“I am so tired,” she whispered.

“I know.”

“I am so tired of pretending.”

“Then stop.”

She looked at him.

“Stop running,” he said.

“Stop hiding. Stop pretending you are not the most powerful woman in this city.”

She shook her head.

“I cannot.”

“You can.”

“You do not understand.”

“Then make me understand.”

She was silent for a long moment.

Then she spoke.

“I was hunted ever since I was a child, some people know something about me and threaten my family to hand me over, but my family refuse and make up story so I can hide. since I have been hiding ever since.”

Her voice broke.

“The people who looking for me are still out there, they don’t believe that i just missing. And I am too weak to face them.”

Damon pulled her into his arms.

She resisted at first, her body rigid with years of discipline, years of holding herself together.

She collapsed against him, sobbing.

For the first time in years, she stopped running from the truth, the pain, herself.

He held her, saying nothing.

Just his arms around her until she had nothing left to cry.

When she looked up, her eyes held something new.

Acceptance.

“I do not know what comes next,” she said.

“Neither do I,” Damon admitted.

“But we will face it together.”

She nodded.

A small, fragile motion.

But it was a start.

Damon released her gently and stood.

“Get some rest. Tomorrow is the tournament.”

She watched him walk toward the balcony.

“Damon.”

He stopped.

“Thank you.”

He looked back at her.

“You are welcome, princess.”

“Wait… I want to tell you something.” She stopped Damon from leaving.
