Chapter 76 -Elena and Olivia

0 Views 0 Comments

“I think that’s everything,” Elena said as she packed the last of her belongings into a cardboard box, getting ready to leave Olivia’s apartment.

As sad as it was, they had decided to break up.

There was no drama between them. They had made the decision together and agreed to part on good terms.

Their relationship had simply become too monotonous. There was no excitement anymore, just long stretches of boredom, like an old married couple.

Except they were both still in their twenties.

Elena had always known this day would eventually come. That was why, during their nine months together, she had slowly prepared her heart for the day Olivia would finally end their relationship.

And that day had come the night before.

Elena had just finished writing a Chapter of her book and was getting back into bed when Olivia told her that she thought they should break up.

Elena had been shocked at first.

But she quickly pulled herself together like a champion and simply said, “Okay,” as if it were nothing before turning her back to Olivia and going to sleep.

“Yeah, I think that’s everything,” Olivia replied.

She stood there in front of her soon-to-be ex-girlfriend the person she had been with longer than anyone else in her dating life.

Elena remained standing there awkwardly too.

It was finally time to leave.

Once she walked through that door, everything would truly be over.

She hid it well, but she was on the verge of tears. Despite how casually she had responded the night before, the truth was that Elena had been happy with Olivia.

But she couldn’t force Olivia to stay with her.

So she had accepted it and decided to leave.

Olivia suddenly stepped forward and pulled her into one last hug.

Elena hugged her back, quietly breathing in her scent one last time, as if she wanted to memorize it.

“Do you want me to drive you to your place?” Olivia asked.

“No. That would be too awkward,” Elena replied, still wrapped in her arms.

“Okay. But don’t forget to call me if you need anything,” Olivia said before giving her a gentle kiss on the forehead and letting her go.

“Okay.”

Elena picked up the box.

“Well then… goodbye,” Olivia said.

Elena nodded and walked out of the apartment where she had practically lived for almost a year.

She didn’t look back.

She just wanted to get out of there before she completely lost control.

The moment she stepped outside, however, her tears began falling uncontrollably.

She had tried so hard not to cry.

But once she was alone, she couldn’t hold them back anymore.

On the bus, she cried like an idiot without caring about the people staring at her.

When she finally reached her apartment, she dropped the box and immediately threw herself onto her bed.

She cried until exhaustion finally took over, hoping sleep would be enough to make her forget the pain in her chest.

A week later, Elena realized something.

In her books, she often wrote about creepy exes who stalked their former girlfriends.

But in real life, she had discovered that she was the ex who stalked.

Never in her life had she imagined she could become that kind of person.

But after a week, she had somehow made peace with it.

Because, honestly, accepting that she had become a stalker was still better than accepting that she had to give up on Olivia.

Fortunately, Elena had quit her librarian job several months earlier to focus entirely on writing, so she had plenty of free time to waste.

Her first book had been a huge success, bringing her a decent amount of money and helping her build a large and loyal fan base.

Every morning, Elena woke up early and went to a small café quite far from her apartment, located in a much nicer neighborhood.

She always sat at the same table in the back, near a window.

And as you might have guessed, she wasn’t there just for the coffee.

The café was directly across from Olivia’s apartment.

So, every morning, Elena sat there just to watch Olivia leave for work.

As always, Olivia was as punctual as a clock. She left her apartment at exactly the same time every day.

Elena couldn’t see her very clearly because Olivia usually got straight into her car, but she seemed perfectly fine.

And that annoyed Elena.

How could Olivia already look like she had moved on when they had broken up only a week ago?

Didn’t Olivia have any feelings left for her?

Had she really forgotten about her that easily?

Elena found that completely unacceptable.

Why should she be the only one suffering over their breakup?

Once Olivia drove away, Elena packed her things and left the café.

But instead of going home, she headed straight to Olivia’s apartment.

She still had a spare key that she hadn’t returned yet.

When Elena unlocked the door and stepped inside, she immediately noticed something strange.

The apartment was a mess.

Not a complete disaster, but messy enough to surprise her.

Olivia had always been obsessed with keeping everything organized.

She used to wake up early just to tidy the apartment, even when Elena thought it was already perfectly clean.

Elena locked the door behind her and slowly walked through the apartment where she had spent most of the past year.

She spotted one of Olivia’s jackets lying around and picked it up.

Without even thinking about it, she brought it to her face and took a quiet sniff, enjoying the familiar scent.

Then she walked into the bedroom.

Her eyes immediately landed on the bed.

It hadn’t been made.

A small smile appeared on Elena’s face.

There was no way Olivia would ever leave the house without making the bed.

Not even if she were sick.

Elena knew that better than anyone because they had gotten into countless arguments over it.

But that wasn’t all.

On the bed was one of Elena’s old T-shirts that she had apparently forgotten.

And on the nightstand were several used tissues.

Elena stared at them.

Olivia had probably been crying the night before.

Suddenly, everything made sense.

The most likely explanation was that Olivia missed her just as much as Elena missed her.

But then why had she asked to break up?

Elena thought about it for a moment.

Maybe Olivia had only wanted to test her.

Maybe she had expected Elena to fight for their relationship and tell her that she didn’t want to break up.

She probably never imagined Elena would simply say, “Okay,” go to sleep, pack her things the next morning, and leave without looking back.

“What an idiot,” Elena muttered, realizing how foolish she had been.

She had been so convinced from the beginning that Olivia would eventually leave her that she hadn’t even bothered trying to save their relationship.

And now, because of that insecurity, she had somehow become a criminal breaking into her ex-girlfriend’s apartment.

Elena was about to leave when something on the table caught her attention.

Olivia’s planner.

Elena frowned.

Olivia never went anywhere without that planner, especially not to work.

She picked it up and opened it.

Her eyes widened.

Olivia had taken time off from work.

Elena’s plan to go directly to Olivia’s workplace and win her back had just fallen apart.

But then she noticed something else.

Olivia had written down where she was going.

She had gone to her parents’ house in another city.

Elena knew her parents well enough. She had met them twice before, and they had always been very kind to her.

Elena stared at the address for a few seconds.

Then she made up her mind.

It was crazy, but she wasn’t going to sit around and wait for Olivia to come back.

If she wanted to win Olivia back, she was going after her.

Even if that meant traveling to another city.

Elena had been there once before in Olivia’s car, so she had to look up where the bus station was to figure out how to get there.

She was ready to leave, but then she realized something.

If she was going to win back a woman as perfectionist as Olivia, she needed to put some effort into her appearance.

So that’s exactly what she did.

She went home to change into something more presentable.

Then she went to a hair salon and had her hair done.

After that, she went shopping and bought a pretty dress and a pair of shoes.

When she looked at herself in the mirror afterward, she was satisfied with what she saw.

She knew Olivia would like it too because Olivia had always complained that Elena never cared enough about her appearance, even when they were going out together.

This time, Elena was determined to surprise her.

By late afternoon, she finally arrived in front of Olivia’s parents’ house.

Her heart was pounding like crazy, but she forced herself to keep walking.

She was holding a bouquet of flowers she had bought on the way.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

Elena knocked on the door, wearing a nervous smile.

She was surprised when a man she had never seen before opened it.

“Hello!” the man greeted her.

He looked to be in his thirties.

“Hi! I’m here to see Olivia,” Elena said with a polite smile.

“Ah, yes. You’re… You’re…” the man began, clearly trying to remember her name.

“Elena,” she supplied, wondering who he thought she was.

“Right! Elena. That’s it. Come on in!” he said warmly.

Elena stepped inside.

She immediately noticed that there were a lot of people around, almost as if some kind of celebration was taking place.

“Olivia’s out back,” the man said, pointing toward the door leading to the backyard.

Elena wanted to ask what was going on, but she didn’t want anyone to realize that she had shown up uninvited.

She walked into the backyard and froze.

There were several people gathered around a long table.

Her nerves immediately intensified.

She hadn’t expected to win Olivia back in front of half her family.

Then Olivia’s mother spotted her.

“Elena! You’re finally here!”

She immediately walked over and pulled Elena into a hug.

’What the hell is going on?’ Elena thought, becoming more and more confused.

Why did it feel like everyone had been waiting for her?

Then she looked toward the table.

Olivia was sitting there, talking to a man Elena immediately recognized as her older brother the military guy.

Elena quickly assumed the whole gathering was probably to celebrate his return.

She slowly approached the table.

Olivia was laughing until she noticed Elena.

Her smile disappeared instantly.

She looked completely stunned.

Her older brother followed her gaze and immediately noticed Elena too.

“Hi, everyone!” Elena said, greeting the people around the table.

Olivia covered her face with one hand, lowering her head as if she were utterly embarrassed.

“You must be Elena,” Olivia’s older brother said as he stood up.

“Yes, that’s me,” Elena replied, bracing herself for the worst.

Instead, a huge smile appeared on the man’s face.

“Nice to finally meet you. I’m Oliver.”

“Olivia has told me so much about you. Honestly, I’m glad you finally showed up. She’s had quite a bit to drink and hasn’t stopped talking about how pretty you are.”

He chuckled.

“Now that you’re here, I can finally see what she was talking about.”

Elena couldn’t help feeling pleased that she had taken the time to dress up.

But then another thought hit her.

Why was Olivia still talking about her to her family if they had broken up?

None of this made sense.

Unless…

Olivia hadn’t told her family they had broken up.

“Thank you,” Elena said before holding out the bouquet. “And this is for you. Thank you for serving our country.”

Oliver looked surprised before accepting the flowers.

“Thanks. That’s really sweet of you.”

“Come on, sit down,” he said, pointing to the empty chair beside Olivia.

Olivia looked visibly drunk and had remained unusually quiet, perhaps out of embarrassment… or maybe something else.

“Hey,” Elena said softly, reaching for Olivia’s hand.

Olivia didn’t pull away.

So Elena stayed.

She joined the celebration, talked with Olivia’s family, laughed, and chatted about all kinds of things.

It was probably the first time Elena had ever made such an effort to socialize.

She wasn’t even this social with her own family.

Later that night, it was finally time to sleep.

Elena and Olivia went into Olivia’s childhood bedroom.

After Olivia had sobered up a little, she finally looked at Elena.

“Why did you come here?” she asked.

Elena reached into her bag and pulled out a key.

“I came to give you this.”

She placed the key in Olivia’s hand.

“I’m a terrible ex-girlfriend,” Elena admitted. “I couldn’t stop myself from stalking you and going into your apartment while you weren’t there because I really missed you.”

Olivia stared at her in shock.

But she remained calm.

“Tell me something,” Elena said. “Why did you ask me to break up with you?”

“I never wanted us to break up,” Olivia replied sadly. “I just wanted you to tell me that you wanted us to stay together. I never thought you’d actually agree that easily.”

Elena looked down.

“I thought that’s what you wanted. Because, honestly, Olivia… you’re too good for me.”

“What? I’ve never thought that.”

“I’ve always thought you were perfect. You’re creative and laid-back. You’re everything I’m not. I’m boring and way too uptight.”

“What? You’re not boring at all,” Elena immediately argued. “Without you, I probably wouldn’t have made any money as a writer because I’m way too lazy and I’m a terrible procrastinator. I can barely focus on anything.”

Olivia stared at her.

Then Elena stared back.

And suddenly, they both realized it.

They had completely misunderstood how the other saw them.

Their relationship hadn’t fallen apart because they didn’t love each other.

They had simply failed to communicate their feelings.

Both of them had been insecure, and both had been too afraid to say what they really felt.

They had almost thrown away their relationship because of it.

“So…” Elena said with a small smile. “Do you want to be my girlfriend again?”

Olivia nodded.

“Yes.”

A bright smile spread across her face before she suddenly threw herself at Elena and kissed her passionately.
