Chapter 192: The crushing power of a god
Blake barely has time to dodge another blazing fireball hurled at him by Mia.
Not completely, though.
The flames catch his right calf at point-blank range, melting part of his armor.
He manages to tear the damaged armor off before the flames can spread across the rest of his body, but his leg is still left with severe burns.
Even though the wound is only superficial, and Blake is still in peak condition, it takes a surprisingly long time to regenerate.
More than a fight, what Mia’s doing to him is target practice.
She isn’t in any hurry to finish him off. The massive wall of fire she raised around them makes sure there’s no escape.
She’s not worried about suddenly running out of strength, either. Since Azkarith has complete control over Mia’s body, he knows exactly how much longer she can keep going before she collapses.
He plans to use every last second of that time to indulge his destructive nature.
If it were up to Mia, she would’ve killed Blake as fast as possible and rushed to help Isabelle against Zayn.
But Mia isn’t the one in control and Azkarith couldn’t care less about Isabelle or anyone else.
All he wants is to wear his opponent down, destroy him little by little, and finish him for good the moment he feels the body is about to give out.
“D-Damn monster… how dare you toy with me?!” Blake growls, in pain and burned in several places.
He suddenly thrusts both arms forward, and a torrent of scorching steam surges toward Mia.
Inside the steam, countless tiny shards of frozen blood.
A devastating storm of boiling heat and razor-sharp blades… that Mia effortlessly blows away with a powerful flap of her draconic wings.
“H-How the hell did you become this strong, Mia Valakys…?” Blake stammers, his arms still stretched out in front of him, trembling from pain and exhaustion.
“You’re still calling me by that name? It really won’t sink into that thick skull of yours that the one standing before you is no longer that pathetic vampire princess, but a God? Fine. I’ll make sure that finally gets through your empty head before I kill you.”
Mia rises majestically into the air, her massive wings spread wide and wrapped in blazing flames.
“Kneel before me and worship me, foolish mortal. Pray in my name, and I promise I’ll put an end to your suffering once and for all.”
“S-Shut the fuck up! I swear, Mia Valakys… the moment we meet again in the Realm of the Dead… you’ll pay for this!”
“You really think you’re going to the Realm of the Dead? Foolish mortal… your soul isn’t going anywhere! There’s nothing my flames can’t destroy — not even souls. You’ll be erased from existence forever!”
“Y-You’re bluffing, Mia! Only a God could do something like th—”
Blake suddenly cuts himself off, frozen in terror.
“N-No… it can’t really be you…”
“So you finally figured it out? Better late than never. But why that look of terror? It’s an honor to die at the hands of a God. Too bad you won’t be around to brag about it.”
Mia lets out a loud, sinister laugh that sends a chill down Blake’s spine.
Then the pink flames pouring from her draconic wings flare even higher, swirling around both of them like a raging firestorm.
“Unfortunately for you, this mortal body is about to give out. Which means playtime is over. Begone forever!”
The blazing vortex suddenly closes in around Blake.
Then, after his agonizing screams, a catastrophic explosion of flames reduces every tree, blade of grass, pebble, and even the very ground within its reach to ashes.
Where that part of the forest once stood, nothing remains but a vast, smoking wasteland.
The moment she unleashes that devastating spell, all of Mia’s strength leaves her at once.
The flames surrounding her vanish, and her appearance returns to normal.
With her wings gone, she can no longer stay airborne. She crashes hard onto the scorched ground, slamming into it with a heavy thud.
“M-Mia… h-hang on, Mia… I’m coming…” Chris pants, his voice weak.
Using his katana for support, he drags himself toward her one agonizing step at a time, his body barely moving from the pain and exhaustion.
It takes him what feels like an eternity to cover the few meters between them.
When he finally reaches her, he collapses beside her.
“I-I’m so glad you’re okay, Chris…” she whispers, a faint smile on her lips.
“S-Saying I’m okay is a bit of a stretch… I’ve definitely had better days…” he replies with a faint smile of his own.
Then his expression suddenly turns grim.
“U-Unfortunately, it’s not over yet… Isabelle still hasn’t taken down Zayn Thzraneel. It’s not like her to struggle this much against someone so much weaker than her. S-Something must’ve happened… speaking of Zayn… we have to go find Lyon… we have to help him…”
Mia’s expression darkens as well.
“I-I’m afraid that won’t be necessary… the vampire who attacked me from behind earlier… was the one Lyon was fighting…”
Chris’s eyes suddenly go wide, now glistening with tears.
“N-No… it can’t be… Lyon can’t… it’s not fair…” he sobs, struggling to hold back his tears. “W-We don’t know that he’s dead… maybe he was just defeated. Maybe that vampire thought he was dead and left him there before coming after you…”
Mia barely has the strength to shake her head. She reaches for Chris’s hand and weakly squeezes it.
“The Crimson Requiem is an assassin squad… they don’t make mistakes like that… I’m so sorry, Chris… I really am…”
Chris is crushed by those words. He’d only known Lyon for a few months, but he’d already come to see him as one of his closest friends.
But before he can give in to his grief, the sound of something rustling puts him on alert.
The moment he turns toward the noise, the overwhelming sorrow over losing his friend is replaced by pure terror.
An arm rises from a mound of molten rock, scorched earth, and ash not far away.
Then another.
Then a head.
Finally, with tremendous effort, the figure pulls itself to its feet.
He’s little more than a skeleton.
His skin is completely charred, covered in crusted burnt blood and fresh blood that’s still pouring from his wounds.
Yet despite his face being so horribly disfigured that it’s unrecognizable, and not a single strand of hair left on his head, Chris and Mia know exactly who they’re looking at. The realization fills them with overwhelming terror.
“Y-You little pieces of shit… did you really think that was enough to kill me…?” Blake rasps, his voice weak and hoarse.
Smoke and blood spill from his mouth with every word.
“…y-you’ll pay for what you did to me…!”
