Chapter 204: B - A mysterious savior

0 Views 0 Comments

As if seeing Kimberly walk into a Church of the God of Light wasn’t bad enough, now one of Frank Pyton’s goons has to show up too.

This time it’s Joe Callhan — one of Frank’s top men — trying to drag me into their criminal organization.

A bald mountain of muscle with barely enough brains to tie his own shoes, standing damn near two meters tall.

I ran into him a little while ago in an alley in the Bronx, although I’m pretty damn sure our meeting was no coincidence.

At least Frank Pyton has a bit of class and an education. He creeps me the fuck out, but at least the guy can put together a coherent sentence.

As for Joe, I seriously doubt he’s ever opened a book in his life. I’m pretty sure a three-year-old could speak better than he can.

“So, are you planning to tail me all fucking night or what?!” I snap, my blood-red axe still clutched in my hands, fresh blood dripping from its blade.

At my feet lie the decapitated bodies of six members of a small-time local drug ring.

Six more steps toward my goal of cleaning up this city and making it a safer place.

One day, when I’ve become strong enough, it’ll be Frank’s turn and every other criminal bastard in that organization.

I swear it.

“So why don’t you join us? You’d have a lot to gain working for Mr. Pyton,” Joe asks in his usual caveman grunt.

“Oh yeah? Like what? Go on, I’m curious.”

“Uh… well…”

Joe mutters something — a string of incoherent, guttural noises.

Frank probably made him memorize some prepared answers, but he must’ve forgotten every single one of them.

What an idiot…

I don’t even get the chance to turn down his offer for the hundredth time before…

FLASH!

…a blinding burst of white light floods the entire alley for a split second.

What the fuck was that?

Damn… I’ve got a really bad feeling about this.

My head snaps up.

But the concern on my face turns into sheer panic the moment that idiot Joe blurts out two unmistakable words.

“Monster Slayer!”

Shit!

Luckily, vampires have reflexes far beyond those of any human.

That’s the only reason I manage to dodge the downward slash at the last possible second, as it crashes into the ground and tears a deep gash through the asphalt.

And even worse… that isn’t even a normal sword!

I have no idea what it’s made of, but it sure as hell isn’t metal.

It looks more like… solidified light.

Yeah, I know. It sounds ridiculous.

How the fuck is light supposed to be solid? Don’t ask me. But that’s exactly what it looks like.

Some kind of glowing material that doesn’t even seem solid…

Yet the massive gash it left where I was standing a split second ago says otherwise.

I don’t even want to imagine what would’ve happened if that strike had landed.

It would’ve turned me into vampire mince.

And the one wielding that sword… is definitely a woman. A damn sexy one, too. I’m sure of that.

She’s covered from head to toe in a long white cloak and even wears a mask, but those hourglass curves and those firm, toned thighs visible beneath her skintight blue bodysuit don’t leave much room for doubt.

Her entire body radiates the same blinding white light as her sword.

Seriously, she looks like a fucking walking light bulb!

I grip my axe with both hands and level it at the Monster Slayer, ready for the battle that now seems unavoidable.

It’s two against one. We’ll find a way to take her down.

Or at least, that’s what I thought…

…because that son of a bitch Joe turned tail and ran the instant he saw the pissed-off glowing woman come crashing down on me!

The one time he actually could’ve been useful, the bastard bolts!

It didn’t even cross his mind to say something like, “I’ll help you… but only if you join us.”

Not that I would’ve said yes, but I would’ve at least thought about it.

Too bad he’s too fucking stupid to come up with an idea like that.

The Monster Slayer strikes again from close range.

I manage to catch her blade of light with my axe, but…

CRACK!

…my weapon shatters the instant it collides with hers.

What the fuck…?!

Shit… this woman’s ridiculously strong and fast.

How the fuck is she even human?!

I’ve got to think of something.

If I make it out of this alive, I swear I’m done hunting junkies, criminals, and every other piece of scum out there!

Although, honestly, they should be thanking me for what I’ve been doing.

I’m cleaning up the trash crawling all over New York’s streets, and this is the thanks I get?!

Getting chopped to pieces by a Monster Slayer?!

Fuck that!

She lunges again with unbelievable speed.

The first thrust goes straight for my heart.

The second follows immediately, aimed at my throat — the only two ways to kill a vampire.

Somehow, I manage to dodge both attacks by a hair.

God of Vampires, please don’t let me die!

Wait… is there even a God of Vampires? I mean… there probably is. Anyway, whoever you are, save me, please!

And just as I finish that ridiculously pathetic prayer…

BAM!

Something crashes down from above, landing right between me and the Monster Slayer just as she’s about to attack me again.

Now standing between us is a demonic creature with a lean, well-defined build, not particularly tall but clearly powerful.

Its skin is pitch-black. A long tail tipped with a razor-sharp stinger sways behind it, and a pair of horns rises from its head.

Both the tip of its tail and its clawed hands are wreathed in blazing red-and-black flames.

I have no idea what that monster is or why it just saved me. But I’m not about to waste the opportunity to run.

So that’s exactly what I do.

Behind me, heavy thuds and violent impacts echo through the alley.

I figure the Monster Slayer and my mysterious savior are beating the hell out of each other, but that’s not my problem.

The only thing that matters is that somehow, I’m still alive.
