Chapter 239: Too much of a wreck (2)
The way to activate it was simple. Without using magic power you pulled the brush tip. The effect released electric magic around it and silenced them, and in the worst case it took a life. Only female adventurers could purchase this magic tool. Male adventurers could not purchase it no matter how stubborn they were. There was even a rule that if a male adventurer was found buying it through the back he would receive the maximum penalty. There had been voices saying it went too far, but it was said that unless they went that far the cases of female adventurers being attacked at the time would not have stopped.
Because of the effect, when female adventurers purchased it they were made to write a pledge not to use it carelessly. Even so just having it was a check on male adventurers, and the chance of yourself being put in danger got lower. Now there were few cases so few male adventurers knew it existed, but among female adventurers it was a self-defense method passed from seniors to juniors. Well, veteran male adventurers knew, so I think that side was passed to juniors the same way. I explained that far, then said in a voice too small for anyone else to hear,
“Hilbyid is a woman, and from Yulral. I’ll tell Erika how to purchase it, so you should go buy one soon. Including the duke’s daughter’s share too?”
“…Thanks. In exchange I won’t press why you have this magic tool.”
“Hahaha. You hit a sore spot. Ah. I’m asking. If it gets out I’ll eat the maximum penalty.”
Hilbyid returned the magic tool to me, smiled mischievously, turned on her heel, and went back toward Relia and Tia. I watched Hilbyid’s back with a troubled smile and handed the magic tool to Teine, who was beside me at some point. Teine took the magic tool, put it away somewhere, poked my cheek with her index finger, and said happily,
“You could just say it isn’t yours.”
“In that case if they ask whose, I’d be in trouble. If Hilbyid has a little of my weakness she’ll feel safer too.”
“…Haa. Raide-sama really is a handful.”
“Hnn…??”
I had meant it mixed with a joke, but Teine smiled in an exasperated way, pressed my cheek a little harder with her index finger, and left. I looked sideways at Teine’s leaving back, did not understand, and tilted my head. Now then. Had I been that much of a handful? …This is bad. Because of Hiero I had started recognizing my own actions as “handful” too. I smiled wryly, rubbed the back of my neck with one hand, turned my eyes back to the students, and started walking to check on them. Well then. If the setup was done I would teach something that had bothered me since reincarnating, something even the adventurers did not do.
The time was approaching eighteen hundred, lit by the sunset. Looking inside one tent the students had set, a student was lying on the floor spread-eagled. From behind me the older sisters looked at the lying student enviously and started grabbing my shoulders and shaking.
“I-Instructor!? You didn’t teach us!”
“H-hey… can I next?”
“That’s true. Why didn’t I notice…”
“Wait~, does this mean~~ we can bring futons~~~~~”
“No… you’re active adventurers. You’re the ones who should have noticed, you know?”
I turned an exasperated face toward the adventurers shaking my shoulders. They mumbled “That’s true but…” What I had done was nothing special. I had just laid a silver wolf rug inside the tent. Even if the tent fabric was made thick, it was too hard to lie on the ground. I had heard that from adventurers who came drinking at the tavern, and from comrades during the war too. Every time I heard it I could not stop wondering why they did not take them when they had Magic Bags.
Magic Bags had a storage limit, sure, but things for camping could be stored easily. If you asked me I also did not really get why peddlers used carriages to carry goods. If they used them as beds or were carrying living things I would get it. If not, holding several Magic Bags and carrying would not cost the care of the horses pulling the carriage either. When I told the adventurers that the older sisters made difficult faces, sometimes tilted their heads, went “Eh… I see…” “When you say it…” and started discussing while groaning.
For the record Erika’s spot already had a rug down and they were relaxing. She seemed to remember when I showed it before when we headed to Santony together. Erika was hugging a pillow and rolling around… too cute? I wanted someone to praise me for holding back hard from hugging her because we were in training.
I called to the students and older sisters and turned my feet toward my own tent a little away. Then Roy was standing there. Behind Roy, as if hiding her body, was Shinku. What’s wrong? I tilted my head. Roy smiled in a troubled way and whispered to Shinku. Shinku nodded small at Roy’s whisper, stopped hiding her body, stood beside Roy, and suddenly bowed her head. I was surprised. I did not understand anything. I put one knee on the ground and hurriedly told Shinku to raise her head. Shinku raised her face with an apologetic expression and started talking in bits in a small voice.
“Back then… thank you. I’m sorry I was late… saying thanks.”
“Ah. That. I didn’t do anything. If anyone did it was my lovers. If you’re grateful I want you to give it to them.”
“But… un.”
Shinku nodded hard at my words and smiled. I nodded and smiled back. I stood, put one hand on Roy’s shoulder, glanced at Shinku, then said,
“Roy. I’m leaving Shinku to you.”
“Yes. I won’t make her sad anymore.”
“Uuuu~~~”
“Eh, ow… what, Shinku, that hurts”
At Roy’s words Shinku’s face went red and she started tapping him fairly hard with both hands. I looked at that and smiled wryly. Teine, who had come up beside me, muttered “Another handful…” I would pretend I did not hear. Roy, you’re being called a handful too. If you protest when you notice, do it to Hiero. Hiero should have been the one who started it…
