Chapter 112: monarch of blood.
He stumbled out of the dark mouth of the tunnel and into the open world. The harsh glare of the morning sun struck his eyes, forcing him to wince as an agonizing sting pierced his vision.
Yuki wobbled, his legs trembling as he fought to keep his footing. Birds chirping in the canopy, small creatures scuttling through the brush, the subtle rustle of leaves—every single sound vibrated through his hyper-sensitive, Rank 1 pureblood senses, threatening to split his skull open.
Scanning his surroundings, Yuki realized he was nowhere near the town of Blue Oak or the capital. Just like when he had first arrived in this world, he had completely blacked out and wandered miles off course while feral.
His veins burned with a primal, ravenous hunger. Knowing there was no telling when he might lose control and butcher an innocent passerby, he decided to stay out of his pocket dimension and avoid populated areas entirely until he stabilized.
Wandering deeper into the dense wilderness, Yuki’s senses picked up multiple presences ahead. The forest was crawling with people, but they certainly weren’t civilians.
He crept forward through the underbrush just to scout them out—or at least, that was the lie he told himself to justify getting closer to fresh meat.
Slipping silently into the perimeter of their camp, Yuki found himself staring at an entire army of targets. Unaware that a bloodthirsty monster was lurking in the shadows mere feet away, the bandits continued their daily routines, hauling supplies and chatting casually.
”Did you hear the news?” one bandit asked, stroking his long black beard while adjusting a heavy wooden crate on his shoulder. “They say there was a massive uprising on the outskirts of the capital. And in that town called Blue Oak, there was an entire nest of succubi! Ha! They all got wiped out the second the Kingdom’s knights arrived.”
”Damn shame,” another grunted, running a whetstone down the edge of his dagger. “I would’ve loved to get my hands on one of those elf babes. Hell, even a succubus would’ve done nicely.”
”Hey! Back to work, you morons!” a third yelled, glaring at them. “We’re in the far east of the capital! It would take us over a hundred days just to walk back. There’s no way to get there without an aerial vehicle or a ship.”
”Why don’t we just use the grand teleporter if we’re hypothetically heading to the capital?”
”Because spatial magic is jammed, idiot! Anyone who tries using it gets ripped apart instantly,” the bandit spat, shaking his head in disappointment at his men.
Before they could argue further, another bandit shouted as he strode into camp, his voice raspy. “Hey! The boss is calling for you idiots! Let’s move out—we found another town to raid!”
Without wasting a second, the men snapped into motion, packing up their gear and supplies with practiced, focused steps before filing out of the clearing.
Yuki stared at their retreating backs. Every instinct screamed at him to stalk them into the tree line and devour their blood to quench his burning hunger, but his brain reined him in. His senses were still dangerously overloaded; even at Rank 1, taking on an entire army in his current condition was a suicide mission.
He took a slow step backward—and bumped directly into a solid, warm figure standing right behind him.
Before Yuki could whirl around, the person pressed gently against his back.
Goddess Varisa leaned over his shoulder, extending her pale, arm right in front of his face.
”Bite. And drink up,” she commanded softly. “I need you at full strength.”
Yuki leaned back slightly, staring up at the deity in sheer confusion, his body trembling with intense pain. “Why are you helping me?” he rasped out. “Don’t you want me dead?”
”No, I do not,” Varisa replied calmly. “I need you. Yes, you are thoroughly annoying to deal with, but I have moved past that. You need to become a Demon Lord—or at least gain enough power to support a faction in the coming war.”
”The war?” Yuki asked, his brows furrowing. “Is there going to be a war inside the Ascension Trial?”
”No. In the main world,” Varisa clarified. “As you know, there is the Human Territory, the Holy Order, and the Cult of the Black Cross. The Abyss Continent is riddled with conflict. Whether you like it or not, you are caught right in the middle of this mess—and plenty of Administrators, deities, and gods have their eyes locked on you.”
She looked down at him, her gaze cool and unwavering. “If you become my champion, I can guarantee that no other god will be allowed to intervene in your life.”
Yuki paused, the gears turning in his head. “What about Nuvellia?”
”She remains your Administrator, and you are still her only apostle,” Varisa answered. “I am a deity; I will not harm her. You have my word.”
Yuki silent for a long moment, weighing his options before speaking. “…What do I have to do?”
”Follow the system’s instructions and grow stronger. I know how crafty you are, and I know you are a survivor. I have no doubt you will master your [Blood Manipulation] in due time,” Varisa said. Then, her tone sharpened slightly. “Now, enough talk. Drink.”
She offered her arm once more.
Driven by pure vampiric instinct, Yuki bared his fangs and bit down into her soft flesh. The rich, divine blood hit his tongue, and he began drinking like a man dying of thirst in the desert.
Gulp after gulp, mouthful after mouthful, he greedily drained her essence until the burning in his veins subsided, his pureblood core stabilized, and his body returned to normal.
”Thank you,” Yuki murmured, releasing his fangs and stepping back.
Varisa produced a small cloth, casually wiping the trace of blood from her skin. Within a fraction of a second, the wound knit together and vanished completely.
”Yuki, keep in mind that the strength of a Rank 1 varies drastically,” Varisa instructed, looking at him intently. “The monsters you will face out here are far stronger than the ones back in the mountains. Do not do anything reckless—focus on hunting weaker targets for now.”
”I will,” Yuki nodded. “…Do I ignore pre-Rank 1 monsters?”
”No. If they possess an essence core, kill them and absorb it. It won’t yield as much energy as a Rank 1 core, but every bit counts. Remember, you now require 2,000 Rank 1 cores just to reach the threshold for Rank 2.”
”I understand.”
”Good. Now go hunt, as you always do,” Varisa said, pausing slightly as her eyes narrowed. “And Yuki?”
”Yes?”
”Stop picking up women. This is a war,” she said flatly. “You already have Vee and Kasumi. Get more later—for now, stay focused.”
Yuki cleared his throat. “I understand. No more foolishness… But how do I get back to the capital from here?”
”Go find a knight named Raven. He will help you.”
With those parting words, the Goddess patted Yuki lightly on the head and vanished into thin air.
Inside a dimly lit tent nearby, three individuals sat gathered around a wooden table. The mood in the room was suffocating, heavy with dark, unbearable tension.
”So we have to deal with the Blood Monarch and the silent Raven… Great. Just great. Two Grand Inquisitors attacking us from two different sides!” the first man spat, his voice filled with burning rage.
”What do you want done with them?” asked the second man—a heavily armed knight sitting at the far end of the table, his hand resting on the pommel of his sword.
”They are both as strong as Rank 1s,” the first man replied, leaning back and casually slumping his boots onto the tabletop. “Go and kill Raven. As for the little cute one, the Blood Monarch—bring her to me. I’ll show her a good time and teach her how to behave properly.”
”Right,” the knight grunted with a firm nod. He stood up, grabbed his heavy blade, and strode out of the tent into the camp.
Turning his gaze toward the third person in the room, the noble scowled. “Why are you still sitting there? Go and help him bring me that woman!”
”You really are a disgusting human being, you know that?” the third person replied, her face contorting in sheer contempt. “You betrayed the Kingdom and operated out here for so long simply because the capital was too far away to care. And now that two powerful Rank 1 Inquisitors have actually arrived, you’re cowering behind us?”
She folded her arms tightly over her chest, letting out a sharp scoff. “Tsk. Have some dignity and act properly.”
”Just go and get me that demoness,” the noble snapped back, his eyes narrowing. “Do that, and I’ll give you a brand-new batch of women to play with.”
”Hmm… Fine, that works,” she mused, standing up from her seat. “Just make sure no Elite Knights show up. We’d need a massive army of Rank 1 soldiers to fight them, and our numbers aren’t what they used to be.”
”I know, I know! Just get moving,” the noble barked impatiently. “No Elite Knight is coming this far out.”
With a soft, dark chuckle, the woman grabbed her sword, rested the flat of the blade casually over her shoulder, and sauntered out into the morning air.
