Chapter 130: The Devil’s Warm Solace
Ana pulled against the unyielding grip around her wrists, the dark wood of the bedpost biting into the backs of her hands.
”What other price could there possibly be?” she challenged, her voice tight but unwavering as she held his suffocating gaze. “You paid a hundred million. You put yourself between me and Dante’s dogs. If you wanted to own me completely, Damian, you already got your pound of flesh.”
A low, humorless chuckle vibrated against her ear, dark and sharp as broken glass.
Damian’s thumb traced a slow, deliberate line down the curve of her jaw, his knuckles grazing the heated skin of her neck. He didn’t ease the pressure pinning her arms above her head.
”You think your grandfather was protecting you with that trust, Anastasia?”
He murmured, his deep baritone dropping into a chilling, calculated cadence.
“The old man was a ruthless pragmatist. He signed a pact with the Sullivans decades ago. That fortune doesn’t just unlock with a signature… it’s tied entirely to bloodline succession.”
Ana’s breath caught in her throat. “What are you talking about?”
”The full terms require the Vance lineage to merge with the syndicate,” Damian rasped, his obsidian eyes locking onto hers with terrifying clarity. “Dante doesn’t just want the money. To claim every last cent of those offshore billions, he needs you bound to him… or an heir born from your blood to secure the syndicate’s legal hold over both empires.”
The revelation hit her like a bucket of ice water. The pieces violently snapped into place… How Dante was ready to pay for one hundred million to buy her out from Damian’s hold.
That day in the cafe, when she was broken, he used it as his leverage and acted as the hero in her life.
It was never just about settling an old score with Damian. It was an outright blood harvest.
Damian leaned closer, his chest pressing flush against hers, his lips brushing the shell of her ear as a wicked, possessive darkness laced every syllable.
”The hundred million I paid only delayed Dante’s legal window,” Damian whispered, his grip on her wrists tightening just enough to claim her entirely. “As long as you are under my roof and bound to me, he can’t touch that bloodline. But now that you know the game, little bird… you belong in this cage. And I will make sure you never leave it.”
Before Ana could process the chilling gravity of the bloodline clause, Damian closed the remaining distance, crashing his mouth onto hers in a deep, possessive kiss.
The heat of it was dark and consuming. His uninjured hand tangled into her hair, tilting her head as he parted her lips, drinking in her breathless gasps.
His fingers trailed lower, catching the hem of her sleep dress and sliding the fabric slowly up her thighs, the rough calluses of his palm searing against her bare skin.
Every nerve in Ana’s body ignited, but as his broad frame shifted, a sharp catch in his breathing betrayed the agony racking his torn shoulder and fresh stitches.
”Damian, wait,” Ana gasped against his lips, planting both hands firmly against his bare chest to push him back. “Stop. You haven’t recovered yet.”
Damian refused to listen.
With a low, defiant growl, his mouth trailed down the curve of her jaw, leaving a trail of hot, bruising kisses along the sensitive line of her throat and shoulder. “I don’t give a damn about the stitches, Anastasia.”
The intoxicating pull of his touch made her head spin, but the memory of his feverish agony that morning snapped her back to reality.
Ana reached up and cupped his sharp jaw with both hands, using all her strength to gently force his face up until his hooded obsidian eyes were locked onto hers.
”Look at me,” she pleaded softly, her dark eyes shining with raw, honest vulnerability. “I don’t want to see you in pain anymore, Damian. Not because of me. Not tonight.”
Damian stared down at her flushed, earnest face. The unyielding determination in her eyes chipped away at his stubborn fury.
With a low, defeated sigh, he reluctantly stepped back, letting the hem of her dress slip back down her legs.
Ana exhaled a quiet breath, turning away to grab a spare pillow from the corner. Without another word, she walked over to the velvet chaise lounge near the balcony and began smoothing the fabric to lie down.
Damian frowned, watching her with dark bemusement. “What the hell are you doing?”
Ana didn’t look back as she set the pillow down, a subtle, dry edge returning to her voice. “Sleeping. Unless I misremembered our arrangement, Mr. Sterling, you never gave me permission to share your bed. Slaves don’t get master suite privileges without direct orders.”
A slow, knowing smile curved Damian’s lips, the shadows in his eyes softening with quiet amusement.
He leaned back against the headboard, lifting the heavy duvet on the side beside him, his deep baritone dropping into a low, commanding rasp. “Get over here, Anastasia. Consider it an order… you sleep in this bed until I am completely healed.”
Ana hesitated for a heartbeat, looking from the plush velvet chaise lounge to the expansive master bed.
Seeing the stubborn, unyielding authority in his dark eyes… and knowing he wouldn’t rest until she obeyed… She quietly stepped across the hardwood floor and slipped under the heavy duvet beside him.
The moment she settled in, Damian’s uninjured arm slid beneath her waist, pulling her flush against his side. He adjusted the covers over them both, tucking her head gently against the curve of his unbandaged shoulder.
The silence settled between them, thick and steady, broken only by the rhythmic rise and fall of his chest.
In the dim glow of the amber lamp, Damian’s gaze darkened as he stared at the ceiling, the sharp lines of his profile tightening with grim reflection.
”When you were in that warehouse,” Damian spoke, his deep baritone cutting through the quiet like a low, gravelly hum. “Vivian never keeps her mouth shut when she holds leverage. What lies did she feed you before I pulled you out?”
Ana went still in his arms.
For a fleeting second, the cold, suffocating echo of the warehouse flashed behind her eyes… Vivian’s venomous laughter, the taunts about how Damian supposedly found it entertaining to watch Vivian feed Ana false rumors, how he had allegedly enjoyed seeing her spiral in insecurity during their marriage.
Ana closed her eyes, letting her cheek rest closer against his chest. She listened to the heavy, steady thud of his heart and felt the fresh, rigid bandages wrapping his torn flesh.
Whatever toxic poison Vivian had spat in that basement was completely eclipsed by the reality of the three bullets he had taken to his spine just to bring her home alive.
”Nothing,” Ana whispered softly, her fingers lightly curling into the cotton of his shirt. She tilted her chin up slightly, meeting his searching obsidian gaze with calm, absolute certainty. “Nothing that matters anymore, Damian.”
Damian studied her face in the shadows. He could read the unspoken weight behind her words… the lingering scars of old misunderstandings that had once torn them apart… but he saw no fear or doubt left in her eyes.
A quiet exhale left his lips. His arm tightened around her waist, pulling her impossibly closer into his protective heat, resting his chin lightly against the crown of her dark hair.
”Go to sleep, Anastasia,” he murmured, his voice finally shedding its icy armor, heavy with exhaustion.
Nestled in the circle of his arms, the suffocating tension of the long day melted away, and for the first time in years, sleep claimed them both in total, uninterrupted peace.

The pale gold light of dawn filtered through the sheer balcony curtains, Ana stirred awake.
The fever was entirely gone from Damian’s skin, leaving behind a steady, grounding warmth. His breathing was deep and even, his guard completely dropped in slumber… a rare, unguarded sight that made her chest tighten with an unfamiliar tenderness.
Careful not to jostle his bandaged shoulder, Ana slipped out from beneath the duvet, stepping into the quiet morning light to face whatever storms the day was preparing to bring to their gates.
